Week Fifty-nine: Revisiting Resonating As An Antidote to Fear

As I listened to financial reports one morning, I found myself begin to worry about the economy. Immediately, I remembered that I have recently connected with a new future self (see the meditations page) – a part of me that has even more equanimity in the face of change than I currently experience. As I remembered her, and began to resonate with her – which means, I began to experience myself as her, began to “tune myself to her frequency” – my concerns melted away. They melted away because her particular quality of being doesn’t focus on fears of this kind.

In this time of such change and uncertainty, I’d like to invite you to practice resonating with those attitudes, people, and states of being that convey confidence, ease, calm, and/or whatever other qualities offer you peace of mind. The practice of resonating simply means to identify that which you’d like to emulate or experience and begin to imagine that you are that thing, person, or quality. It’s like fine-tuning a non-digital radio, where you turn the dial until you find just the right place to get a clear signal. For example, when I want to resonate with my future self, I recall the image that emerged to represent her, then I imagine what it’s like to be inside her, and then I notice what I experience. Each of these steps are like just barely turning the dial on the radio, seeking just the right place to get clear reception. Then, I notice what qualities come into my experience that are different from my present-day self, that diminish any fears I may feel in my present-day life.

For this week’s experiment, I’d like to invite you to shift away from fear into greater ease and confidence. You may decide to resonate with your own optimal future self by using the meditation on the Meditations page, or you may choose to resonate with some other source of reassurance and comfort. Whatever you may choose, allow yourself to practice the spontaneous experience of shifting away from fear that comes when you have attuned yourself to your source of greater ease.

As always, allow curiosity to be your constant companion. Learning to resonate with sources of ease and comfort can become a powerful tool for shifting away from disturbing thoughts and feelings, which can be a useful resource in these times.
