Week 354 : Fields within Fields within Fields

Modern physics offers us a map of the world that includes the possibility that we live within fields of information that touch and affect all of us. In every moment, we both contribute to and draw from these information fields. In a very real sense, we can imagine that we are never truly alone – that these fields of information are constantly present and that, in every moment, we connect with the wisdom, intelligence, experience and creativity of every human on the planet. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychologist who was a protégé of Freud, talked about the collective unconscious. Rupert Sheldrake, a British scientist, talks about morphic, or morphogenetic fields. Both these ways of conceptualizing fields of information offer a way to think about this ever-present resource.

Whenever I meet with a group of any kind, I take time to invite the participants to settle in and become aware of the field created by the people in the room – the information field of combined experience and creativity each of us brings by our very presence in the group. Then, I ask them to take some time to become aware of the collective, global field that is present as a support in every moment.

I'd like to offer the same invitation to you. Take a moment, right now, to allow yourself to imagine that – even if you sit alone – you are part of a vast field of information that offers inspiration and support to you. What happens in your body as you imagine this possibility? Is it a source of comfort or discomfort? Does it offer you ease or does it create tension to imagine that you constantly give to and draw from this field, usually without being consciously aware of doing so? There's no right answer, no correct response. This moment's experience is simply an opportunity to notice how you respond to the possible presence of these fields of information.

For me, the most immediate and significant experience of these fields is that they represent the fact that I never travel alone, that no matter how I may feel in any given moment I am constantly part of this larger context, this larger source of inspiration and support. In my office, whenever I feel unclear about what to do next, I consciously open myself to the global field of information, ask for help, and then notice what drops into my awareness. Over the years, I have come to trust that something will come if I just relax, and it is a great source of comfort to me to feel that I am never alone in the work I do or in the life I live.

Also, given that I believe in these fields, I am inspired by the fact that whenever any one of us heals, stretches into new possibilities, or offers acts of kindness and compassion, we automatically give our experience to everyone else who may be on the verge of needing or wanting the same outcomes. Whenever I am faced with a challenge, I know that there have to be others who have already walked the path that's opening up before me, and I invite whatever inspiration and support may be available from that collective resource. It also inspires me that I draw on the wisdom of people I will never know and that people who will never know me draw on my experience.

For this week's experiment, then, I invite you to play with the idea of these fields of information and support and notice what happens. Please be sure not to work at “trying” to consciously draw anything specific from this collective resource. Instead, allow yourself to hold the possibility that these fields exist and then notice what happens when you have the intention that you can become increasingly aware of collective support that is constantly available.
