Week Thirty-Seven:
Winters Opportunity: Perceiving Hidden Possibilities
Walking across Central Park this morning, I noticed how much more of the
park comes into view during the winter, when the leaves are off the trees.
Looking up, near the beginning of my walk, I now see the back of a statue
of a long-ago Polish king, riding a horse, his arms raised to the air.
Throughout the park, I see things that remain hidden during the lush summer
months when leaves fill the branches of the many trees I pass along the
way. As I looked at the statue through the branches of bare trees, my
mind drifted to the gifts winter offers. Cooler, shorter days invite quiet
time of inward seeing, where things hidden in the activities of summer
may come into view.
And so, this weeks experiment invites you to take some time to reflect
on aspects of you and your life that you may overlook during the warmer,
brighter months. In the quiet of a snowy day, perhaps an internal quiet
may reveal a state of mind that surprises you with the comfort it offers.
Or, you may find an old feeling thats been waiting for you to give
it some time and attention in order to resolve it, understand it, work
it through in a new way. You may even find yourself drawn to a creative
pursuit that you overlook in the more active outdoor times of spring,
summer, and fall.
Theres no right thing to discover in this experiment.
Instead, theres just the invitation to explore what this quieter
season offers by way of reflection and inward-turning.
