Week Forty-five: Revisiting The Space that Connects

Sitting in my living room one Sunday afternoon, watching large white clouds dance across the sky, I was reminded of the way that the space around is what connects us. So often, we look across a room, or down a street, and feel separated by all the space between ourselves and others. We may be at a party and our loved one is across the room, deeply engage in conversation with someone, and we may have a momentary pang of loneliness. If we could remember that the space between us at that moment is actually the medium that connects us, we might feel somewhat more comfortable.

When you consider that the space around us is what connects us, how do you feel? What are the sensations in your body when you notice that the cat or dog sleeping over there is inevitably connected to you because you occupy physical space. Even if you weren’t in the same room, the connection would continue because there is no place where there isn’t space. We live in a continuous atmosphere that makes up all the space around us, the sky, and “outer space”, as well. Nowhere is there a break in space, even when there are doors and windows. The air we breathe is part of the space that connects us.

Does the idea of inevitable connection relax you, or does it make you tense in some way? Is it a comforting thought to know that you cannot not be connected? This week’s experiment offers an opportunity to notice how you experience connection, even when that connection is with so many people and other life forms you will never know personally.

The benefit of this kind of experiment is to give yet one more way to remember that we are never alone. This time, the reminder comes by way of noticing the space that connects us, out of which we never fall, outside which we cannot exist. Remember, as always, that if you have mixed feelings, that’s fine! It’s all part of whatever you experience, and whatever you experience is all part of you as a unique being. When possible, be curious and simply notice whatever you discover as you move through the world experiencing the space that connects.
