Week Sixty-Eight: Tuning Yourself Like A Radio:  Revisiting Resonating

The subject of resonating and frequencies has been in the air recently, and I’ve had a number of conversations with people on the subject over the past month. I’ve written before about the importance of resonating – that the quality and tone of our being in the world matters, as does the quality and tone of that which we bring into our orbit.

A metaphor that keeps emerging in these discussions is that of a radio. If you imagine that all the stations on a radio are present even when you aren’t listening to them – heavy metal on one station, Bach on another – it’s all a matter of what station you’ve tuned in. If you’re tuned to the station that’s playing Bach, you won’t be aware of the heavy metal moving through the airwaves all around you. If you find the station becomes fuzzy, you may discover that you have begun to resonate with a tone, or kind of music, you don’t like. When you feel this way, it’s time to take a moment and retune yourself to the resonance you want to experience and carry.
For example, if you’re having a day of practicing compassion, that’s the station you’ve chosen as your quality of being in the world for that day. If you find yourself slipping into irritation with someone, you know you’ve begun to lose your clear reception of the resonating frequency of compassion. At those moments, it’s time to regroup and tune back in to the frequency you want. If you find yourself rattled, you can choose to tune into the resonating frequency of being centered. It’s a matter of becoming conscious of the tone you’re experiencing and then recognizing that you can do something about it.

The important thing to realize is that everything you need is already present. All the qualities you want to have in your daily experience are already all around you, just as all the radio stations are constantly passing through your body, even when you don’t have them tuned in. Whatever quality or tone you want to bring into the day is there. The only challenge is how to tune into it. Two ways I prefer to do this are through images and body sensations. When I need to recenter, I might recall the color of a light that I associate with being settled, grounded, and solidly centered. By filling myself with that color, I tune into the “station” I want. It’s always there; it’s just a matter of finding out the most efficient way to tune into it. Or, I might bring an image of my future self to mind and allow myself to begin to resonate with that – to “step inside” her in my mind and become who she is.

These processes don’t require any forcing. Whether through imagery, body sensation, or some other way, the process is one of focusing your awareness on the resource you wish to access and then allowing yourself to naturally begin to resonate with it. By continuing to focus your attention on it, the resonance will emerge automatically. Where your attention goes, so goes your frequency.

Enjoy playing with this experiment. There are an infinite number of “radio stations” to tune into, and you can see what happens when you choose various qualities of being, resonate with them in whatever ways work for you, and notice your experience.
